Drinking a couple glasses of green tea each day may have profound beneficial effects on your health. Researchers in various studies have found that green tea can prevent and even fight cancer and heart disease, lower cholesterol, aid in weight loss, prevent diabetes, and more!
Green tea contains a high concentration of naturally occurring antioxidants, because green tea leaves are not fermented like other types of teas. This is the source of most of the health benefits claimed for green tea. Antioxidants have recently become a almost a fad in amongst health-conscious consumers because of their cancer-fighting and anti-aging properties.
Several studies have shown that drinking two glasses of green tea a day can inhibit cancer growth. One Japanese study, which followed 500 Japanese women who were suffering from breast cancer, found that green tea consumption before and after surgery correlated with a lower recurrence of cancer. Another study in China found that drinking more green tea lowered the risk of stomach, esophageal, prostate, pancreatic, and colorectal cancer. Also, an analysis of 22 different studies found a correlation between drinking green tea and a reduced risk of lung cancer by 18 percent.
Green tea also benefits your heart. A Japanese study found that drinking four cups of green tea may reduce the severity of coronary heart disease. A similar Dutch study found that green tea consumption correlated with less clogging of the coronary arteries. Because the antioxidants in green tea are dilators, consuming more green tea improves the flexibility of blood vessels and may make them less likely to become clogged.
Green tea has also been shown to help with weight loss. Studies in Japan and the Netherlands have supported this claim. Participants in the Dutch study who drank the most green tea lost the most weight and body fat, had lower blood pressure, and had lower “bad” cholesterol. By lowering body fat and cholesterol, it is also believed that the risk of diabetes is reduced.
Green tea has been shown to have many health benefits. Even if you don’t believe all of the hype surrounding this ancient beverage, you can’t deny that green tea is at least better for your health than the carbonated sodas you most likely normally drink!
